HypnoBirthing® The Mongan Method
Childbirth education for a safer, more comfortable birthing, in a way that most mirrors nature
What is HypnoBirthing® ?
HypnoBirthing is as much a philosophy as it is a technique. Like the bodies of our sister creatures in nature, the bodies of healthy pregnant women instinctively know how to birth, just as their bodies instinctively know how to nurture the development of the babies they are carrying. HypnoBirthing helps mothers align with their own innate capacity to be able to give birth gently, comfortably, powerfully, and joyfully.
How does HypnoBirthing® prepare us for labor and birth?
Both body and mind must be conditioned for labor and birth. The HypnoBirthing program guides mothers and their birth companions through a variety of techniques including relaxation, visualization, special breathing, and meditative practice. Each technique has several alternatives to choose from, so parents can adopt whichever method proves most effective for them in achieving the calm birth they desire.
How does HypnoBirthing® work?
When fear and anxiety are present in a laboring mother, physical and chemical changes occur that are counter-productive to birth. Her body releases catecholamines (stress hormones), inhibits endorphins (relaxing hormones), and generates the “fight, flight or freeze” response. This automatic defense mechanism, forged in the mind, causes her physical body tense up, rather than open, and creates unnecessary discomfort. With an awareness and understanding of this automatic response, parents will have the ability to choose calm. They learn about the relationship between fear and the possibility of pain. Through education and conditioning of deep relaxation, mothers are able to release fears and anxieties surrounding labor and birth, and allow their bodies and babies work together in a comfortable, natural way.
Each HypnoBirthing series consists of
five classes, 2.5 hours in length, to be taken over a consecutive 5 week period, as required by the HypnoBirthing® Institute.
Group sessions are $350 a couple. This includes:
- 12+ hours of childbirth education
- HypnoBirthing® textbook
- Two audio CDs for guided Rainbow Relaxation, birthing affirmations, and birth rehearsal imagery
- All class handouts including birth preferences worksheet, birth companion prompts, relaxation scripts, and imagery
- Unlimited email/phone support from Lindsay, HBCE, CLEC.
- Make up sessions are $70
- Private sessions are available, inquire for scheduling and pricing
- Certified Lactation Educator Counselor
- 2.5 hours of breastfeeding education for expecting couples/mamas. Please inquire for scheduling and pricing.
The recommended start time for a series is around 28 weeks of pregnancy, but it is never too early to sign up! The sooner you begin, the more time you have to practice. Similarly, it has been shown that moms who start classes in their last weeks have had as much success as women who have taken classes in the first trimester. If you are concerned you may not have enough time to complete the five week series before your guess date, contact Lindsay about a private session.
I am the mother of two amazing girls, born in 2011 and 2013. As anyone with children will attest, their births changed my life. Their entry in to this world made me feel more connected than ever before, and left me with a sense of empowerment, exhilaration, and awe. My birth experiences made me fully realize how allied we are with nature, and how fascinating the mind-body-spirit connection truly is.
Prior to having children, I worked in the district library for San Diego Unified School District. I received my BA in Literature and Writing studies from Cal State San Marcos, and my Masters in Library and Information Science from San Jose State University.
My background in research and information science led to my fervent exploration of childbirth methods during my pregnancy with my first daughter in 2010. I was seeking a calm, natural experience, despite planning a hospital birth. I was immediately attracted to HypnoBirthing®, as it is most aligned with the philosophies and values I already held. I had two incredibly empowering birth experiences, and I passionately, yet humbly, want to share the joy that can be found in an educated, connected birth.
We not only give birth to new life, but our baby breathes new life in to us; we are born as parents. I firmly believe that the more mentally and spiritually connected we are to pregnancy, labor, and birth, the easier we transition to our new role as parents. I started teaching HypnoBirthing so that parents can be empowered to use their voices and exercise their choices to have the memorable, joyful, and exhilarating birth experience they dream of.
